purity is not assay, discovered the expensive way
The best fortnight of the year for anyone who likes being right about definitions. A member posted a 99.4 percent purity report as proof their vials were fine, and was asked how many milligrams were in them. They did not know. Nobody had asked before. The channel spent nine days working out what that actually means and the answer changed how the room reads paperwork.

What happened
- Purity is the fraction of what is in the vial that is the target compound, and assay is how many milligrams are actually present.
- A vial can be genuinely 99.4 percent pure and still hold eight milligrams against a ten milligram label, and both facts can sit on one certificate.
- Shanghai Wibson was discussed as a supplier whose documents included content as well as area percent, which at that point was not universal.
- Janoshik reports were compared side by side to show which line on the page is the one people had been ignoring.
- area_percent chose the handle this fortnight and the room has never let it go.
- The pinned wording in the analytics channel dates from these nine days and has been edited exactly once since.
