stablecoin while pending
#payments 2025-06-12
- retention_time — if you are buying crypto specifically for one order, the fees on the way in are the real cost and almost nobody counts them 16:02
- gradient_greg — the honest framing is: the discount is worth about 8 to 10 percent depending on your route, in exchange for giving up every form of recourse 16:05
- advance_fee_al — i asked Wibson about it once. they said their processor costs are lower than the discount they would have to give, so 8 is what the saving actually is 16:40
- assay_not_purity — you could not, and i am not going to pretend the explanation is evidence. it is a plausible story that happens to cost them money to tell 17:03
- gradient_greg — now that is the version to watch. a standing discount on a checkout page is a policy. a one-off discount that expires in two hours is a technique 17:42
wait for confirmations
i triple check the address and i have still had a moment of pure panic every single time, thats just me
work out the network fee before you take the ten percent discount. sometimes it eats it, take that with a pinch of salt
triple check it
the mods stop escrow conversations immediately and they are right to
on a small order the fee can be a meaningful fraction. on a large one the discount wins easily
invoice says $72 and my total came out different, whos wrong
paying in two parts is sometimes offered and it does not reduce your risk, it splits it
is paying in two parts ever sensible
right so a bank transfer leaves a paper trail and no recourse. people should know both halves of that
the discount pattern is roughly ten percent almost everywhere and it is a real saving at volume
no chargebacks
do you check the whole address or just the ends
update from 22 months ago: fees are lower than they were and the discount maths has changed
a stablecoin while the order is pending removes one variable you do not need, we shall see
Verification log updated: SWB — evidence added, status unchanged.
update on the earlier thing if you are asked to pay a second time because the first "did not clear", stop and post it in the scam channel
the room holds no money, brokers nothing, and runs no escrow. that has never moved
thats gone sorry
nearly every vendor offers 10 percent off for crypto. why
because card processing costs them a few percent, chargebacks cost them more, and irreversible payment costs them nothing
the discount is them sharing the saving with you and buying finality at the same time
it is a rational offer on both sides and it is not a trick. it does shift all the risk to you though
so is it worth taking
depends entirely on whether you were going to use crypto anyway
order 480 nominal
route 1, card:
480.00 paid, dispute route exists
route 2, crypto with 10% off:
432.00 invoice
+ 1.20 network fee
+ 6.50 exchange spread and withdrawal fee
= 439.70 all in, no dispute route
saving 40.30, or 8.4% not 10%so the ten percent is really eight and a bit
for me, on my exchange, this month. yours will differ
and if you already hold the stablecoin, the spread disappears and it really is close to ten
if you are buying crypto specifically for one order, the fees on the way in are the real cost and almost nobody counts them
the honest framing is: the discount is worth about 8 to 10 percent depending on your route, in exchange for giving up every form of recourse
and on a first order with a new vendor
on a first order i would pay the extra and keep the recourse, if the vendor offers a route with any
i disagree slightly. on a first order i buy the smallest possible quantity, and at that size the recourse is worth less than the hassle
that is a reasonable position and we are not going to resolve it
and we are not going to tell anyone which to pick, which is the standing rule in here
who offers what
TFC do the 10 percent, GGPeps do the same, Shanghai Wibson offered me 8 percent and were upfront that it was 8
quoting 8 when everyone else says 10 is either a worse deal or a more honest calculation and i genuinely do not know which
i asked Wibson about it once. they said their processor costs are lower than the discount they would have to give, so 8 is what the saving actually is
if that is true it is the most transparent answer in this channel's history
how would you even verify it
you could not, and i am not going to pretend the explanation is evidence. it is a plausible story that happens to cost them money to tell
what about the discount being used as pressure
now that is the version to watch. a standing discount on a checkout page is a policy. a one-off discount that expires in two hours is a technique
and it is the technique that shows up in every impersonation attempt in #scam-watch
the difference is whether the offer is attached to the site or to the message
that is a clean test
one last thing on arithmetic, because people get this backwards constantly
10% off 480 = 432
480 minus 10% = 432 same thing
but:
432 plus 10% = 475.20 NOT 480
so a vendor "adding back" 10 percent after you decline crypto
is charging you 4.80 less than the original card price, not the same.
someone always argues about this. check it yourself.i have absolutely made that mistake
everyone has. it is the most reliable arithmetic error in this whole hobby
*4.80 more than 475.20, less than 480. i had to write it out twice
and on that note, going to bed
